In the face of political and ideological divides between their respective countries, five years ago Daniel Barenboim, an Argentinean Jew and Israel’s most famous conductor and pianist, along with
Christian Palestinian philosopher Edward Said, put together the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.
Symbolically named after Goethe’s book of poems called West-Östlicher Divan, a synthesis of Islamic and European poetry published as the Napoleonic Wars drew to a close, the Orchestra comprises an equal number of young Israeli and Arab musicians aged between 13 and 26. For all its symbolism, and hopefully something rather more than that, the aims and ambitions of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra are first and foremost musical ones: the Middle East’s political divides are eschewed for a union of musical talent, which speaks volumes for cultural interaction. Once the music starts, that is what matters. And it mattered considerably at this concert, the orchestra’s members fresh from a residency in Seville – radiating learning and conviction, and sharing the wonderful power of music in no uncertain terms. In this live recording from a concert in the Victoria Hall in Geneva two familiar masterworks were presented with significant import, Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto and Tchaikovsky's famous 5th Symphony. As an encore, we also hear the overture from Verdi's La Forza del destino and Jean Sibelius' "Valse triste".

Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major by Ludwig van Beethoven is Beethoven for piano virtuosos. Margarita Höhenrieder shines on the piano, accompanied by the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden conducted by Fabio Luisi. The concert took place in 2008 at the Philharmonie im Gasteig Munich.
(00:00) I. Allegro con brio
(18:39) II Largo
(29:50) III Rondo: Allegro scherzando
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) wrote seven piano concertos, five of which are numbered as opuses. The Piano Concerto in C major, Op. 15 is known as Piano Concerto No. 1, even though it was not the first concerto for piano that Beethoven wrote. First drafts for the Piano Concerto in C major date from 1793, a first complete transcription was available in late 1794 or early 1795, a new score existed before 1800 and finally the print appeared in 1801 after the solo part had been rewritten a second time. Beethoven probably performed an early version of the C major concerto himself in Vienna in 1795, where he is also thought to have performed a later version for the first time in 1800.
Beethoven initially wrote his piano concertos primarily for himself. As a piano virtuoso, he wanted to show off his skills to an audience with the solo concertos; he was, after all, famous for his brilliant improvisations on the popular instrument.
There are similarities between the Piano Concerto in C major and Symphony No. 1, not only with respect to the period in which they were composed. In both works, the young Beethoven’s knack of bringing forth the most diverse musical emotions from a simple thematic idea is already evident. And both works are characterized by a festive tone in which virtuosity is celebrated to the highest degree.

Wilhelm Backhaus quickly emerged as the purest representative of the great Germanic tradition. First of all, his repertoire, which over the years has been narrowed down to Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven - whose complete sonatas and piano concertos he will perform on recordings and in concert - Schubert, Schumann and Brahms, of which he was one of the greatest interpreters. Then there is the style, with a rigorous construction based on an in-depth study of the score, a nobility of tone and a sobriety of means that are very characteristic. Behind a surface austerity, one must know how to rediscover a carnal sonority, a passion for objectivity far removed from coldness and indifference, a total commitment, in short a sincerity of which there are few examples. Among his major recordings is a complete set of Beethoven's thirty-two piano sonatas. His recording of Beethoven's five piano concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt also remains a reference , which is considered one of the most balanced, despite its often austere character.
